Recognition of Occluded Objects

چکیده
3 Pattern recognition involves building a mental model to interpret incoming inputs. 4 This incoming information is often incomplete and the mental model must 5 extrapolate to complete the patterns, a process that is constrained by the statistical 6 regularities in nature. Examples of pattern completion involve identification of 7 objects presented under unfavorable luminance or interpretation of speech cor8 rupted by acoustic noise. Pattern completion is also at the heart of other high-level 9 cognitive phenomena including our ability to discern actions from still images or to 10 predict behavioral patterns from observations. 11 Pattern completion constitutes a ubiquitous challenge during natural vision. 12 Stimuli are often partially occluded, or degraded by changes in illumination and 13 contrast. While much progress has been made towards understanding the mecha14 nisms underlying recognition of complete objects, the neural computations under15 lying more challenging recognition problems such as object occlusion remain 16 poorly understood. Here we generically refer to object occlusion to include any 17 transformation where only partial information about an object is accessible (such as 18 the multiple examples illustrated in Fig. 1), and refer to object completion as the 19 ability to infer object identity from partial information (without necessarily 20 implying that subjects perceptually fill in the missing information). 21 Understanding how the neural representations of visual signals are modified 22 when objects are occluded is critical to developing biologically constrained com23 putational models of occluded object recognition and may also shed light on how to 24 solve manifestations of pattern completion in other domains. The development of 25 feed-forward models for visual recognition of whole objects has been driven by 26 behavioral and physiological experiments establishing the hierarchy of feature 27 tuning and robustness to image transformations. Similarly, by systematically 28 examining when and where neural representations that are robust to occlusion

Recognition of Partially Occluded Elliptical Objects using Symmetry on Contour
There are many research efforts in object recognition. Most existing methods for object recognition are based on full objects. However, many images contain multiple objects with occluded shapes and regions. Due to the occlusion of objects, image retrieval can provide incomplete, uncertain, and inaccurate results. To resolve this problem, we propose a new method to reconstruct objects using symm...
متن کاملPigeons' recognition of partially occluded objects depends on specific training experience.
DiPietro et al (2002 Perception 31 1299-1312) reported a dramatic improvement in pigeons' recognition of partially occluded objects after the birds had been trained to recognize objects that were placed on top of another surface. Here, we investigated whether training with partially erased stimuli or with notched stimuli that had a thin gap between the object and another surface would similarly...
متن کاملUrban Vegetation Recognition Based on the Decision Level Fusion of Hyperspectral and Lidar Data
Introduction: Information about vegetation cover and their health has always been interesting to ecologists due to its importance in terms of habitat, energy production and other important characteristics of plants on the earth planet. Nowadays, developments in remote sensing technologies caused more remotely sensed data accessible to researchers. The combination of these data improves the obje...
متن کاملRecognition of Articulated and Occluded Objects
ÐA model-based automatic target recognition (ATR) system is developed to recognize articulated and occluded objects in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images, based on invariant features of the objects. Characteristics of SAR target image scattering centers, azimuth variation, and articulation invariants are presented. The basic elements of the new recognition system are described and performanc...
متن کاملRecognition and Reconstruction of Partially Occluded Objects
A new automatic system for the recognition and reconstruction of rescaled and/or rotated partially occluded objects is presented. The objects to be recognized are described by 2D views and each view is occluded by several half-planes. The whole object views and their visible parts (linear cuts) are then stored in a database. To establish if a region R of an input image represents an object poss...
متن کاملPolygonal shape description for recognition of partially occluded objects
We introduce a new method for the recognition of partially occluded objects represented only by their contours. Object description, which stems from the inflection point detection, approximates the object by polygon and is affine invariant. The matching algorithm is simple and easy to implement. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
